John Carver tells talkSPORT: Newcastle fans have no need to panic about Rafa Benitez and lack of transfer business

John Carver has told Newcastle United fans not to panic, insisting there will be major signings this summer and Rafa Benitez will remain as manager.

It has a been frustrating transfer window for the Magpies so far, with a permanent deal for Christian Atsu the only piece of business done by the club since promotion to the Premier League was secured.

There have been reports of tensions behind the scenes, with boss Benitez said to be feeling increasingly frustrated with owner Mike Ashley and the board at the failure to land a number of his targets.

But Carver is adamant the Spaniard will get the backing he wants and feels Newcastle are well set to enjoy a successful season back in the top-flight.

The former St James’ Park coach and interim manager told talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show: “I’ve got to urge the Newcastle fans to be patient

“Don’t panic. Don’t listen to the scaremongering about Rafa leaving and he’s going to quit because we haven’t signed anybody.

“I can guarantee you there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes. Rafa will have his plan in place. He’ll have his targets: one, two and three. He’ll know what his priorities are.

“A million per cent Mike Ashley will back Rafa because I know where the football club is now. It’s in a sound position.

“You look at the assets they’ve got there and they’ve got a lot of good Championship players, and there will be sides in the Championship knocking on Newcastle’s door to try and get them because they all want to get back into the Premier League.

“They’ve got five or six players who are saleable assets there. That will be extra money to go into the coffers along with the money they’ve received from promotion and the money that they’ve made in the past.

“I think there is money to be spent for sure. I’m delighted how they have changed their policy and allowed the manager to pick the players. There is less on the staff now to make the decisions.

“We have got momentum from last season. Just be patient, Newcastle fans. Don’t listen to the scaremongering. We are still on a crest of a wave and we don’t want anybody upsetting that.”
